The technique of intarsia, which produces the familiar and captivating Mosaic-like pattern, was perfected in Damascus and spread eastwards to Persia and India and west to Africa, Andalusia and into Europe. A classic example of intarsia can be seen today in the marble floor of St Peter's Basilica in Rome.
